Commercial Kitchen Canopies for Island Cooking Lines

An island canopy hangs over cooking equipment that stands in the middle of the kitchen rather than against a wall. It is common in open kitchens, hotels, large restaurants and production kitchens where staff work around the line.

Because there is no wall to help contain the plume, island canopies need careful sizing, support and duct routing. We fabricate and install them as one system with the ductwork and fan.

What Is Different About an Island Canopy

We check the ceiling construction, hanging points and duct route before fabrication, so the canopy is delivered ready to fit rather than modified on site.

  • Hung from the structure above, so support framing and ceiling height matter
  • Filters and finish on all sides, often visible to customers
  • Larger overhangs to capture a plume that can escape in any direction
  • Back-to-back cooking lines under one hood
  • Central duct spigots routed through the ceiling space

How We Build It

KS Steel Engineering has been operating for 13 years from Epping. You send us the layout or equipment list and a few site photos; we confirm measurements, scope the canopy, ducting and fan, and quote. The canopy is fabricated in our Epping workshop, then our team delivers and installs it and connects the ductwork and fan.

Because we make the canopy ourselves, changes to size, filter layout or duct connection points are handled at the fabrication stage rather than on site.

Standards, and Where We Install

Commercial kitchen ventilation in Australia is governed by AS 1668.2, and other requirements cover the fire performance of surrounding construction. What applies depends on the building, the cooking equipment and your local authority. We fabricate to the design and approvals for your project.

Our workshop is at Unit 1/22 Salicki Ave, Epping. We install across Melbourne, including the northern suburbs of Lalor, Thomastown, Mill Park, Bundoora, South Morang, Whittlesea, Reservoir, Preston, Campbellfield, Broadmeadows and Craigieburn, plus Altona, Dandenong, Clyde and Geelong. We have also completed projects in regional Victoria (Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton, Mildura, Wodonga, Seymour, Moe and Drouin) and in Canberra.
